About Abortion

Abortion is common. 1 in 4 people with uteruses in the United States will have at least one abortion over their lifetime. We have friends and loved ones who had abortions, and chances are, so do you.

Abortion is normal. People of all ages and from all walks of life have abortions. Women have abortions, trans men have abortions, and non-binary folks also have abortions. People who have children have abortions, and people who plan never to have children have abortions. People of faith and people of no faith likewise have abortions.

Abortion is ancient. People have been choosing to abort pregnancies since humans first learned to use herbs as medicine.

Abortion is okay. For any of an infinite number of reasons, a person may choose to abort an unplanned pregnancy. For any of an infinite number of reasons, a person may choose to abort a planned pregnancy. People who have abortions are making the best decision they can for themselves and their families.

Abortion is compatible with religion. Don't take our word for it: Faith Aloud, Religious Community for Reproductive Choice, Interfaith Voices for Reproductive Justice, SACReD, and more organizations all say that abortion is compatible with religion.

Abortion is healthcare. There are those who like to say that abortion can't be healthcare because "pregnancy isn't a disease". But on the one hand, pregnancy isn't a medically neutral state. Pregnancy is complicated, and disease can arise. And on the other hand, preventative care like routine testing and vaccination are healthcare, and they're often given to people who are perfectly healthy.

Abortion is safe. The rate of complications from medication and procedural ("surgical") abortions is low, and most complications are minor. Very few people die from abortion, vastly fewer than die from pregnancy. Further, self-managed abortion with pills has been found to be safe as well.
